The Monarch butterfly is a well knowned butterfly from Northern America and its famous by its migrations from the United States and Canada to Mexico.

In the Algarve it was initially recorded in the end of the 19th century but after that it was only recorded during the 1980's. In the 1990's several colonies were discovered in Western Algarve. Since then it stabilized in the region with several dozens of colonies scattered troughout the Monchique, Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa, Silves, Albufeira e Loulé municipalities.
No Algarve foi inicialmente reportada no final do Século XIX mas só voltou a ser avistada durante os 1980's e durante os anos 90 foram descobertas várias colónias no Barlavento Algarvio. Desde então, esta espécie parece ter estabilizado no Algarve, ocorrendo algumas dezenas de colónias nos concelhos de Monchique, Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa, Silves, Albufeira e Loulé.
It inhabits mainly areas near rivers and other wetlands where it feeds on Milweed (Gomphocarpus fruticosus). In gardens seems to prefers Scarlet Milkweed (Asclepias curassavica) and in Vilamoura it can use Montpellier Scamony (Cynanchum acutum).
Habita locais próximos de linhas de água ou outras zonas húmidas, onde se alimenta de Gomphocarpus futicosus. Em zonas ajardinadas parece preferir Asclepias curassavica e em Vilamoura por vezes recorre a Cynanchum acutum.
